UA Theme 3

Pre-Release Version

This is a pre-release version of the theme intended for testing. While it should be stable enough for production use, it is not intended to be a plug and play update. If your area has the time, please consider helping us test this update by updating your site and reporting any issues you run into.

If you want to install this beta alongside the production version, unzip the file and rename the ua-theme folder to ua-theme-beta and re-zip before uploading to WordPress. This will let you easily switch back and forth. Be aware that theme settings set through the customizer are not shared between them.

Breaking Changes

This update brings the improvements made in Minerva 2.0 to the theme. To best align with future needs, several blocks have been updated in ways that may create a "breaking change" upon updating.

Compatibility Mode & Tools

This update includes two tools to help mitigate the effects of breaking changes and help you update the affected content. The Minerva v1 compatibility mode is ENABLED BY DEFAULT and maps many old variables to the closest v2 equivalent. It supports legacy styles and settings as well.

This update also includes a migration tool, found under Support > Migration Tool, and lists every instance of content with an outdated attribute, what needs to be done, and an auto-fix button for each item as well as a Fix All button to do them all at once.

When updating to 3.8, you will see a red alert at the top of the wordpress dashboard titled "Critical Web Maintenance Alert". This indicates that the site is running in compatibility mode and the site editors need to work to update their content by reviewing the issue list and fixing them automatically or manually and verifying everything executed correctly. When everything has been updated, you can disable the compatibility mode from the same screen, which will remove the alert banner.

New Features

• All UA Theme markup uses the corresponding Minerva PHP component for rendering. This prevents drift from the design system, which can result in difficult to track bugs.
• Assets are now included in the theme instead of requesting them from assetfiles.ua.edu
• Added a new Tabs block
• Added a new Eyebrow block
• All of the improvements and changes from Minerva 2
• Support for the ICS Calendar plugin

Enhancements

• All controls for the Event block are now located in the block settings sidebar
• The link control for ALL components is now located in the block editor toolbar instead of the block settings sidebar
• UA components, like Card, now set their variant by a new dropdown control instead of the default WordPress "styles" selector
• Covers can now have their color mode set explicitly by style. The default theme is no longer derived from the overlay color, but by the WordPress is-light class which is calculated based on image and overlay combined brightness.

Removed Features

• The Breadcrumbs block has been deprecated, use the core WordPress block instead
• The Lead Text block has been deprecated, use a styled paragraph instead

Important: Due to some changes in this release, the user will need to uncheck "sidebar" and "hero" when they want to remove these sections from a page. Deleting the "Page Settings" block will no longer have any effect. (#514)

• The WP Quote block has been redesigned to be less visually heavy. For the former quote style, use the PullQuote block instead. You can easily change a Quote block into a Pullquote block using the block transform option.
